What is MS?

Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body's defenses attack the sheathing on the nerves in the brain, the brainstem, and the spinal cord.

Although MS affects a wide population of men and women, the most typical person with MS is a woman in her mid to late 30's. Often the initial symptoms are mild and frequently misdiagnosed. Typical early symptoms are numbness in an extremity or extreme fatigue.

More severe symptoms include paralysis, visual perception problems, and mental impairment.

The progression of the disease can be very slow or shockingly rapid. It can get progressively worse or the symptoms can diminish and then later return. Some people with MS wind up in a wheelchair; others who have had it for years will be riding in this year's MS 150 on their bikes!
