Why ride a bike ride to fight MS?

The Bike MS tours are fundraising events held all over the U.S. A Bike MS tour succeeds because it can unite so many different kinds of people together for a short focused time to accomplish great things.  The event mobilizes not only thousands of cyclists, but also their families and friends, hundreds of volunteers, and communities along the route.

The Lone Star Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society manages three rides each year: Houston to Austin in April, Frisco to Fort Worth in May, and San Antonio to Corpus Christi in October.

Our first Bike MS for 2011 was the BP Bike MS 150 from Houston to Austin on April 16-17, the largest in nation. This year 15,000 dedicated cyclists and their sponsors hope to raise more than the $15 million dollars raised last year.  84% of the money raised goes toward medical research and client services.

The next ride on the schedule was the Bike MS:Sam's Club from Frisco, Texas to Fort Worth, with an overnight stop at the Texas Motor Speedway.  Because Liz and I really wanted to watch our youngest son perform in an orchestra concert as a freshman at A&M, I wound up riding this ride remotely at the Veloway in Austin one week later on May 7-8.

Our third Bike MS tour for 2011 was the Valero Ride to the River on the weekend of October 15-16.   We left from the AT&T Center in San Antonio via rural roads to Seguin and then turned to the northwest to finish the first day in New Braunfels.  The second day took us back to San Antonio via a different route and finished in grand style at the home of the Spurs. Fantastic weather, beautiful scenery, and a chance to ride with old friends and make new ones combined for a very successful ride. Ride photos here.
